Everyone has a Mom. My Mom passed away 5 years ago and while she could be extremely exasperating, she was indeed still my Mother…the lady that gave birth to me and changed my dirty diapers. I still think of her everyday with mostly fond memories…as the others seem to fade into the past, as they should.

As we all age…life does seem to soften a bit around the edges…

This is my tribute to Ottilie….you will be missed!

My husband and I were fortunate enough to bring her over to spend the winters in the United States with us for the last several years. Every spring we took her back to her house and garden in Austria which she loved. This last spring she told us that she would not be coming back to the US again. The travel was just too difficult and the air on the plane was bad for her lungs. She would spend hours trying to speak to me in English…which I never could quite understand…my husband said she wasn’t speaking German either! All I could really figure out was that we enjoyed each others company and we both loved her son which seemed to be enough.

One of my funniest memories of her came during my last visit to Austria in May. My German is not the best, and her English was about the same, but we always got along great. Of course, I always tried to help her when I could….one day she wanted an important envelope mailed and “told” me that the mailbox was just across the street…OK…I can do that…I know that the mail boxes over in Austria don’t really look like ours in America….they are yellow and have a different shape. I went out the gate and crossed the street and walked up and down looking for the correct “box” to post her letter. The only box I saw that was yellow looked like it held newspapers…obviously not the correct place to leave her important “stuff”.

This morning my mother-in-law passed away. She was 86 years old and she led an interesting life. She was born and lived in Austria…of course she lived through World War II, not a pleasant experience for farm girl.Everyone has a Mom

Well, to cut to the chase here…after about 20 minutes my husband asked his Mom if she had seen me…and of course she told him of my “mission”! I guess he watched me walk up and down the street for another couple of minutes before he came out to “rescue” me…he told me to “come on back” that the mailbox had been removed from across the street about 10 years ago!
